Guestbook 2011

The Hunting Ground by Cliff McNish

2011 was the year The Hunting Ground was published in the UK. Savannah Grey was also released in the US. Here are the messages I received that year. Apologies, the dates are all wrong as these are transcribed from my old website.

Hi. I have been reading some of your books recently, and I honestly loved them. It only occured to me today that there might be information about your books online. So, I got on the computer and here I am.
I have been writing quite a few different stories, (I can't pinpoint exactly when it started, but I think it began in grade four), and I was hoping for a little encouragement. But, no. What is one of the first things I read when entering your website? That I should give up hope entirely. well, I will have you know that there is a perfectly fine book in my library, published and everything, written by a twelve-year old. She was so succesful that she even wrote a prequel when she was thirteen. The book is called Stormbird, and the next one is called StormQuest, and they are both quite good. That is all I have to say aside from the simple word "Ha!"

Hello, my name is Jack. I have read the Silver Sequence and can i say that it is the best series of books i have ever read. My favorite character was the Roar. I was wondering if you had a full description about her, which i could use for a school report, thanks!

Dear Mr McNish, I have finally rediscovered you!!! Around four to five years ago I had borrowed Doomspell and The Silver Child from the library. I was only 9/10 at the time so I think I didn't really understand the book as much as I do now. Just two days ago I happened to see Doomspell in a bookshop by pure chance and bought it, as I had a vague remembrance of having read and enjoyed it. Well, I more than enjoyed it. I polished off the book, and just happened to remember another , what I thought was a 'wierd and very original book'. All I remembered of it was that the protagonist's name was Milo, so I searched on google: novel milo boy, and lo and behold, up came a Wikipedia page of The Silver Sequence! I had no idea you have written two of my utmost favourite series of all time! (I've just come back from the bookshop by the way, guess what my purchases included)! I just wanted to thank you for being such an awesome writer; there really is no other author who writes books even slightly as original and gripping as yours. I can read your books more than once, and that's a feat! Age: 14

Hello Cliff McNish, You came to my school today at Westfield and may i say i was thrilled to meet you i am a huge fan. I baught your book Breathe and so far it is my favourite book of all time. It is now my prized persession because you have signed it. We met in the red house reading group i gave you an idea of the end of the world with all the souls of the dead. I also asked what was your favourite book out of all the ones you have wrote. I can't wait to read The Hunting ground it sounds like a great book with the two boys and the girl ghost who is secretly evil and is leading them to a gate way of hell, sounds like my little sister. You are now my number one author infront of Enid Blyton and Jaqulien Wilson. I wish to meet you again to hear more of your stories about the girls and the well. You have inspired me to be a writer. I wish my Dad was as cool as you. It would be awesome if my Dad wrote a story and i'm the main character. Hope to hear from you soon x

    L. Persona (Monday, 23 April 2012 12:43)

Dear Cliff [if you don't mind me calling you by first name, that is hah. This may be a long message, but I still hope you'll read it :]

Oh I've so much to say to you and much more to thank you for! Because you, sir, were actually the reason why I fell in love with reading and, with it, writing. Now it's not my intention of wanting to be a writer or anything, but I'd never learned to love books nor had the will to write [about anything, roleplaying, screenwriting, etc.] if it weren't for your book: "The Doomspell"; it's not 'far-fetched' and neither am I exaggerating [I'm not the type to exaggerate..much, ahem.] about those facts because when I was younger I did like reading, but that was it, I only "Liked" it and wouldn't pick up a book unless someone suggests it or the covers were lovely to look at -yes, I'm serious- but then of course like most stories or journeys begin with a "Once upon a time", that time was when I was only about.. nine and a half years-old?

I was in the school library -because I liked the quietness, plus the people were just lovely to chat with haha- when I told the librarian, a blithesome man named... Oh gosh I can't believe I don't remember his name... I think it was Eric, or Aaron.. let's go with Eric, "Do you like working here? These books everywhere, isn't it boring?" he was an old man, not so old but of course at my age I considered any strand of white hair on a person 'old', and was very sweet and fun, he only gave me a laugh and asked me to follow him into the "Fantasy" section of the area. He stopped -I nearly bumped into him- and looked over the countless names of authors while I just counted the laces on my shoes, until he handed me your book. Now, like most children, I didn't have the desire to read as much as rare bookworms, but Eric told me:

"You know, there's so much more to a book than you know -you're just not looking, or imagining deep enough. Don't just Read, dear, Listen to what the author's are trying to tell you -what their characters have to say- Imagine of the worlds their own minds have conjured -what the difference between reality and fantasy is- but most of all? Live it as if you are there -whatever page you're on, go deeper into it. And I think this book will be a lovely start for you."

I always remembered that, to this day now almost nine years later, of course I was a little skeptical about having to read another book, but Eric told me something so great while handing me your book. So, I read, and not just that; I listened, Imagined, and Lived it, and I thank Eric so much for having given me that wise advice, and thank YOU greatly for writing the book in the first place haha. The Doomspell was so.. invigorating for me when I was young, it was twisted -but not to the point where it was too much for a young child to read- it was psychological -but in a sense where you wouldn't lose a child's mind either- and it was just.. enchanting, is all I can sum up if ever with one word. And ever since then, I gave reading another shot with a much more open and excited mind, I even went to the library during lunch sometimes and read a book with Eric! Haha~ Now I'm even giving writing a shot, although it's more of a want than a desire right now- meaning I don't see this as a career, but who knows? I may just reconsider haha.

..I probably wrote one of your longest messages huh o.o" oh but I could even make it longer if you think so, this was just a summary of it hahaha. I do really mean every word of thanks to you and your books, and it didn't matter whether you started writing late or didn't have time to finish a book as you'd wanted, what mattered was that you ||wrote|| and I absolutely loved and will still love it, all of your books and words. Everything. I am one of your loyal readers, and I deeply thank you; you're one of the ones who changed my life ...okay, maybe a little exaggeration there, so how about "You're one of the reasons I love reading with an open mind as well as heart"? Sound better? Haha. All in all, sir, Cliff McNish, ||Thank You||.

    ~With Love, your loyal reader, L.Persona. ^o^v :]]

Thank you. I have finished Breathe. Wow! It is just as scary as The Hunting Grounds, and I can see how you devoloped Breathe, into The Hunting Grounds. Breathe was so scary, that I had to put the book down several times! It's fantastic. The codes, for me, added to the tension and horror, they involved the reader incredibly well! My favourite part was when the ghost mother entered Jack's Mum, a truly haunting chapter. I feel that your book also explored the complexities of beverment and family issues. What an awe- incredible book!

    F.M. (Monday, 23 April 2012 12:47)

I have recently read your new novel - The Hunting Ground. Usually I tend to stay away from horror and ghost storys, however I was intrigued by your book, it looked far more gripping and intriguing than most horror storys I see.
After starting your book, I soon finished it in a matter of hours, staying up late to read it. What a fantasic story! I couldn't put it down from the word go! It thoroughly chilled me to the bone!! I think that one of the many reasons why I like your book, is that it has many sub- plots, all intricately woven together. The complexity and depth, and the detail of fear is extrodinary! I really enjoyed your book and hope it will be on the Carneige Shortlist, next year. Thank you for such a thrilling read!

    Alexis (Monday, 23 April 2012 12:59)

    Mr. McNish,
I began Angel only because it was the only book that grabbed my attention on my Sociology book report list. I've always been immensely interested in angels and the contradicting ideas of them from the Bible to your own book. I have never seen, in my inexperienced reading of books on angels, the concept of them portrayed like you did it. Also, a show you might be interested in if you really dig angels is Supernatural. Though it deals with the religious side of angels, it's also amazing at portraying the human side of the as well.
Thank you for showing me a different side of angels, it was an exhilarating read!
